Know the Types of Dental Implants: Which One’s for You?

September 21, 2024

Dental implants have transformed the field of dentistry. These innovations have provided a durable and natural-looking solution for missing teeth.

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots. They’re made from biocompatible materials like titanium. Dental experts place implants into the jawbone via surgery. They’re designed to be permanent. Their integration into the jawbone means they can function like real teeth.

There are several types of dental implants. Each one serves a different need based on the patient’s oral health.

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are the most common type of implants. They are often used for patients with healthy jawbones. Dental surgeons place endosteal implants straight into the jawbone. They're composed of small screw-like devices. A crown is then attached to the implant after it fuses with the bone. This type of implant is a stable and long-lasting solution. It’s what makes them popular.

Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal implants are ideal for patients who don’t have enough healthy jawbone. These implants are also good for people who cannot undergo bone grafting. They're placed under the gum but above the jawbone. A metal framework with attached posts is then placed on the bone. The gum tissue heals around it.

Subperiosteal implants are not as popular as endosteal implants. But they’re a viable alternative for people who can’t get traditional implants.

Zygomatic Implants

Zygomatic implants are only used in rare cases. These implants are often selected when the patient’s upper jaw has severe bone loss. They're placed in the cheekbone or zygoma.

The procedure for placing zygomatic implants is complex. It’s often recommended for patients who cannot support endosteal or subperiosteal implants.

The types of dental implants used depend on several factors. These include bone density and oral health. The patient’s preferences are also considered.
